Pacific Surfliner adds trains for SoCal summer events
The car-free route between San Luis Obispo and San Diego will be even easier this summer, according to a press release by Amtrak. From June through early September, the Pacific Surfliner service is increasing frequencies and adjusting schedules to coincide with many of Southern California’s marquee happenings, from the San Diego County Fair to the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. “Our goal is to give Californians more choices for reaching the state’s biggest summer celebrations without adding cars to highways,” Pacific Surfliner Managing Director Donna DeMartino said.
More seats, later departures, and special-event stops
The Surfliner normally operates 24 weekday and 22 weekend trains along the 351-mile LOSSAN corridor, hugging some of the most photogenic shoreline in the United States. This summer’s service plan adds:
- Two extra round-trip trains on peak Saturdays between Los Angeles and San Diego, boosting capacity by roughly 1,400 seats per weekend.
- Later evening departures from San Diego (10:10 p.m.) and from Los Angeles (10:15 p.m.) on select Fridays and Saturdays so festivalgoers and concert fans can linger without worrying about driving home in post-show gridlock.
- Temporary stops at the Del Mar Fairgrounds platform during the San Diego County Fair (June 12–July 7) and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s summer racing season (July 20–Sept. 8). Riders can step off the train at the fair’s main gate instead of relying on shuttles from Solana Beach.
Key dates for travelers to note
Amtrak has timed the supplemental trains around the region’s most in-demand weekends. Highlights include:
- San Diego County Fair, June 12–July 7
- Anime Expo at Los Angeles Convention Center, July 4–7
- Fourth of July celebrations in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Oceanside, and San Diego’s Big Bay Boom
- Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opening day, July 20
- Comic-Con International, July 25–28
- Pageant of the Masters, nightly July 6–Aug. 30 in Laguna Beach (short walk from Laguna’s free trolley, which meets the Surfliner in San Juan Capistrano)
- Endless Summer Classic Car Cruise, Aug. 22–25 in Ventura
Although final schedules may shift by a few minutes because of track-work windows or special-event crowd control, Amtrak has published the majority of summer departure times in the booking engine. The additional trains carry the same amenities—reserved seating, free Wi-Fi, onboard café, bicycle storage, and business-class upgrades—found on the regular Pacific Surfliner fleet.
Reservations and deals: what riders should know
Advance reservations will be required for all trains between July 3 and July 8 and again during Comic-Con week. Multi-ride ticket holders can secure a seat at no extra cost by confirming the dates in the Amtrak app or by phone. Travelers who plan on bringing surfboards, beach cruisers, or electric bikes should add the complimentary bike reservation during checkout because rack space is capped at 20 per train set.
To sweeten the deal, Amtrak is extending two popular promotions:
- “Kids Ride Free on Fridays” allows up to two children ages 2–12 to travel with each fare-paying adult at no additional cost.
- “California Everyday Discounts” chops 15 percent off the base fare for students, seniors, military personnel, and riders with disabilities.
Passengers who connect from San Francisco or Sacramento via the Coast Starlight can apply the same discount codes to the Surfliner leg if both segments are on a single reservation.
Why skip the car?
Anyone who has attempted Interstate 5 on a summer Friday already knows the answer, yet the Pacific Surfliner offers more than a stress-free alternative. The tracks slice through cliff-top vistas in San Clemente, pass under the bluffs at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and skim the Santa Barbara waterfront so closely you can spot dolphin pods. Sightlines like these would be dangerous—if not impossible—to enjoy while driving.
Beyond scenery, station locations tend to be walkable. Downtown San Diego’s Santa Fe Depot sits two blocks from Little Italy’s restaurants and half a mile from the Convention Center trolley stop. In Los Angeles, Union Station connects directly to Metro’s A, B and D subway lines, the FlyAway bus to LAX, and the new Dodger Stadium Express shuttle. Santa Barbara’s landmark Spanish-style depot is within one mile of Stearns Wharf, West Beach, and countless wine-tasting rooms.
Onboard experience
Amtrak upgraded the Surfliner’s rolling stock over the past two years, refurbishing Superliner cars to temporarily replace bi-level Surfliner equipment undergoing long-term maintenance. Seats recline, café attendants serve craft beer from Firestone Walker and AleSmith, and a brand-new contactless snack-ordering system lets travelers schedule a latte pickup by scanning the QR code at their seats.
One area likely to see higher demand this summer is the business-class car. Besides wider seats and complimentary soft drinks, business-class riders receive a free glass of regional wine after 12 p.m., a perk that aligns nicely with afternoon departures from Paso Robles, the gateway to Central Coast vineyards.
Travel planner FAQs
How far in advance can I book?
Schedules are open 11 months out, but the supplemental trains appear in the system about 60 days before departure.
Can I bring pets?
Small cats and dogs (under 20 pounds) are allowed in carriers on most trains for a $29 fee. Pet spaces sell out, so reserve early.
Is alcohol allowed?
Personal alcohol may be consumed only in private rooms aboard long-distance trains, not on the Surfliner’s open coaches. However, the café car offers a selection of craft beer, wine, and cocktails.
What about delays due to coastal erosion projects?
The Del Mar Bluff stabilization continues on weeknights. When tracks close overnight, crews will reopen them before the earliest passenger trains; no construction-related bus bridges are planned through Labor Day.
Insider tips for JetsetterGuide readers
- Grab a left-side window seat when traveling south from Los Angeles for the best ocean panoramas between San Juan Capistrano and Solana Beach.
- Use Amtrak’s free Thruway bus from Solvang or Santa Ynez wine country to meet the Surfliner in Goleta, eliminating the need for a rental car.
- The upgraded Union Station Metropolitan Lounge, open to business-class passengers, offers complimentary La Colombe cold brew and charging lockers, providing a useful refuge if your train departs late.
- For Comic-Con, disembark at San Diego Old Town, stash luggage in the station’s day lockers (often shorter lines than downtown), then hop the Trolley two stops to the convention center.
How to book
Tickets are available at pacificsurfliner.com, via the Amtrak app, or by calling 800-USA-RAIL. Riders can also purchase in person at staffed stations such as San Diego, Irvine, and Santa Barbara. To ensure you are booking one of the added frequencies, look for trains numbered in the 7000 series or labeled “Special Event.”
Whether you are gunning for Comic-Con cosplay bragging rights, eyeing opening day at Del Mar, or simply chasing the kind of sunset that turns Instagram orange, the Pacific Surfliner’s boosted timetable removes the biggest headache: coastal traffic. With competitive fares, family discounts, and a cold local IPA waiting in the café car, why spend an hour hunting for a parking spot when the beach—and the party—are a rail journey away?
