United Adds Okinawa and Osaka Flights in Japan Push

SAN FRANCISCO, United States - United Airlines is pushing deeper into Japan with two West Coast routes that give U.S. travelers more options beyond the country’s familiar Tokyo gateways.

The airline announced Tuesday that it will begin nonstop service between San Francisco International Airport and Okinawa’s Naha Airport in March 2027, operating three flights weekly. United will also add daily nonstop flights between Los Angeles International Airport and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport, according to Bloomberg.

The Los Angeles-Osaka service will supplement United’s existing Osaka flights from San Francisco and Guam. For travelers, that creates another direct U.S. access point to Osaka while reducing the need to connect through Tokyo.

Both new routes are scheduled to begin March 27, 2027, according to Travel + Leisure. The Los Angeles-Osaka flight will operate throughout the year, while San Francisco-Okinawa will be a seasonal service running three times weekly through October.

United Airlines Opens a New U.S.-Okinawa Connection

Okinawa is the more unusual addition. The prefecture currently has no direct air connection to the United States, despite having a significant U.S. military presence and an American population of around 80,000, Bloomberg reported.

United expects to be the only U.S. airline offering nonstop service from the United States to Okinawa when the route begins, according to Simple Flying. The carrier plans to use a Boeing 777-200ER on the route.

This will be United’s first service to Okinawa. The seasonal schedule is aligned with the spring-to-autumn travel period, giving the airline a defined window to test demand for a Japanese destination better known for beaches, diving and a subtropical climate than for the dense urban tourism associated with Tokyo or Osaka.

That matters because Okinawa has traditionally required another flight after arriving in Japan or elsewhere in Asia. A San Francisco nonstop removes one of those connections, although the three-times-weekly schedule will require travelers to build their plans around limited operating days.

Daily Los Angeles-Osaka Flights Target a Broader Market

The Los Angeles-Osaka route is a different proposition. It will operate daily throughout the year using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, according to Simple Flying. Combined with United’s existing San Francisco-Osaka service, the new flight will make Osaka a Japanese gateway served from two of the airline’s West Coast hubs.

Osaka offers a more established mix of tourism and commercial demand than Okinawa, which helps explain the year-round daily schedule. The service also gives Southern California travelers a direct alternative to itineraries routed through Tokyo or San Francisco.

Japan’s tourism boom has been supported in part by the yen’s weakness against the U.S. dollar, Bloomberg reported. United is trying to capture that demand while pursuing destinations and routes not currently served by competing American carriers.

American Airlines has also been expanding in Japan. Bloomberg reported that American announced New York-Tokyo flights in February 2024 and unveiled Chicago-Tokyo nonstop service in July. United previously announced daily Chicago-Tokyo flights and seasonal winter service from San Francisco to New Chitose Airport near Sapporo.

Part of United’s Largest International Expansion

The Japan additions are part of what United describes as the largest international expansion in its history. Its 2027 plan includes 10 new international cities and four additional routes to existing long-haul destinations, Travel + Leisure reported.

Other cities included in the expansion are Luxembourg, Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, Terceira, Ljubljana, Olbia, Catania and Toulouse. The list shows an emphasis on leisure destinations and secondary gateways rather than concentrating all new capacity in the largest global business centers.

United has added around 60 international destinations over the past 10 years and now flies to more than 160 destinations outside the United States, according to Bloomberg.

“The creative and strategic way we’ve expanded our international network since the pandemic has made all the difference, not only for our customers and employees, but also as a way to differentiate United and build a brand focused on customers,” said Scott Kirby, CEO at United Airlines, according to Bloomberg.

The Booking Calculus for Japan Just Changed

Okinawa is the route to watch, but travelers should not treat it like a daily trunk service. Three flights a week and a March-to-October operating season leave less room for loose planning. Anyone building an Okinawa trip around this nonstop should match hotel dates, onward transportation and return plans to the actual operating days before committing to the rest of the itinerary.

Los Angeles-Osaka is the more flexible option. Daily, year-round service makes it easier to construct a Japan itinerary around the Kansai gateway without first passing through Tokyo. It also gives travelers another way to divide a trip geographically, arriving in one part of Japan and departing from another if schedules and fares support that plan.

United is making a calculated bet on travelers who are ready to look past the standard Tokyo entry point. Okinawa tests whether a seasonal, leisure-heavy destination can sustain direct U.S. service. Osaka is the steadier move, adding daily capacity to a market United already serves from San Francisco and Guam.

For now, the sensible approach is simple: treat Okinawa as a limited seasonal opportunity and Osaka as a durable new gateway. Both routes expand choice, but they solve different travel problems. One removes a connection to a remote island destination; the other broadens year-round access to one of Japan’s principal metropolitan regions.
