LAS VEGAS, United States — Even on a recent fight-night weekend capped by the Las Vegas Raiders’ home opener, an unmistakable calm has settled over the Strip. Ride-hailing queues move faster, taxicabs linger at hotel porte-cochères, and drivers say their earnings are slipping as fewer people book rides around Las Vegas.

Las Vegas visitor slump: what the numbers show

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, overall visitation decreased by 12% in July 2025 compared to July 2024. That softening arrives despite a calendar stuffed with major sporting events, concerts, and trade shows that normally shore up summer occupancy. International travel has been the weakest link, officials note, though one bright spot comes from Mexico. From Sept. 11 to Sept. 16, Harry Reid International Airport logged 45 flights originating in Mexico, up from 39 during the same six-day window last year.

On the streets: drivers feel the pinch

Uber driver Roxana Salguero, who has worked the valley’s tourist corridors for seven years, says the slowdown is tangible. “It’s been going down a lot,” Salguero said during an interview with KTNV. She once averaged more than 30 rides a day; lately, that figure hovers near 15, effectively cutting her daily volume in half and shrinking her take-home pay at the same time. Taxi veteran Paul Lueke draws an even starker comparison. “It’s the slowest summer I’ve seen in Las Vegas,” Lueke told the station, adding that only the pandemic produced thinner traffic. Both drivers point to the same culprits that visitors frequently mention in their back seats: resort fees that can rival nightly room rates, paid parking at resorts once famous for their free lots, and cocktail tabs that can reach $100 for just three drinks.

Why travelers are holding back

Travel analysts cite two key factors:
1. Tighter household budgets. Inflation-conscious guests are opting for shorter stays or skipping discretionary trips altogether.
2. Visa delays and policy shifts. Evolving federal rules have lengthened processing times for some inbound markets, making spontaneous visits harder.

The combination has resulted in quieter casino floors on Mondays through Thursdays, lighter ride-share demand, and leaner tips for service workers citywide.

September hospitality deals aim to reverse the trend

To lure guests back, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is partnering with hotels, restaurants, and entertainment producers on a flash promotion that runs Sept. 22–26. Details of the individual discounts were not released, but travelers can expect bundled room rates, two-for-one show tickets, and dining credits designed to offset those dreaded add-on fees.

Tips for Travelers

  • Shop the Sept. 22–26 window. If your schedule is flexible, the LVCVA promotion may result in significant savings on lodging and meals.
  • Price transportation ahead. Rideshare fares fluctuate more when there are fewer drivers on the road. Compare real-time quotes from Uber, Lyft, and local taxi apps rather than assuming one will always be cheaper.
  • Watch for resort-fee-inclusive rates. Some properties now advertise a total nightly price to reduce sticker shock at checkout. Filter for “total cost” on booking engines.
  • Leverage midweek value. With conventions thinner than usual, Monday-through-Thursday rates remain significantly lower than weekend peaks.
  • Consider regional flights. The uptick in service from Mexico suggests airlines are chasing price-sensitive markets. Similar competitive fares may appear from other nearby countries or U.S. gateways.

What the slowdown means for your Las Vegas itinerary

Fewer visitors can translate into shorter restaurant waitlists, easier same-day show seats and improved odds for last-minute room upgrades. Yet guests should be prepared for reduced operating hours at certain attractions or staffing gaps in ride-share coverage during off-peak periods. If you rely on app-based rides, build in extra buffer time when leaving the Strip for suburban golf courses, hiking trailheads, or the airport. Drivers like Salguero, already eyeing second jobs, may log on for shorter stints, creating longer gaps between available cars.

Are room prices actually cheaper right now?

Yes, especially midweek. Official visitor figures show a 12% year-over-year dip, and hotels typically lower rates to protect occupancy.

Is it safe to walk or take public transit instead?

The Strip remains heavily patrolled, and the Deuce bus along Las Vegas Boulevard operates around the clock. Regional Transit’s 24-hour pass costs less than a single short rideshare hop in normal traffic.

Will the slowdown affect casino comps?

Gaming floors often loosen promotional offers—think free play, buffet passes or show tickets—when visitation ebbs. Check loyalty apps for targeted deals before arrival.

Should I rent a car instead of relying on Uber or taxis?

Parking fees can offset rental savings. Compare total costs, including nightly parking and resort fees, against projected rideshare spend.

Looking ahead

The next heavyweight fight, Formula 1’s return in November, and December’s National Finals Rodeo will test whether Las Vegas can rebound before year-end. For now, a quieter Strip offers travelers a chance to stretch their dollars—and maybe their elbows at the blackjack table—while the city recalibrates its draw.
