Southwest Airlines has officially entered the online travel agency (OTA) market, making select flights available for booking on Expedia.com, Travelocity, Hotwire, Orbitz, and CheapTickets. This marks the first time the airline has partnered with OTAs, expanding its distribution strategy beyond its direct booking model.
According to Southwest, all flights will be available on these platforms by February 27. The move follows the airline’s 2023 decision to display fares on metasearch platforms like Kayak and Google Flights, signaling a broader shift in its sales approach.
"We are pleased to broaden our distribution with this new cost-effective channel," said Tony Roach, Southwest's executive vice president of customer and brand. "Expedia provides a high-quality experience, and we look forward to partnering with them to introduce new travelers to our extensive network and Southwest hospitality."
Southwest’s entry into the OTA market represents a strategic effort to increase revenue and attract new customers while maintaining its reputation for customer service and affordability.
