Japan Named Safest Destination in Asia, Ranking 9th Globally in 2025 Travel Report

For those planning to travel more in 2025, Japan stands out as one of the world’s safest destinations. According to Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection's annual travel safety report, released in October, Japan claimed the top spot in Asia and secured the ninth position globally.

The report, which has tracked travel safety data since 2016, surveyed American travelers to assess their perceptions of safety based on destinations visited in the past five years. The findings were enhanced with data from sources such as the Global Peace Index, Numbeo, and GeoSure Global, which evaluate safety metrics in major cities worldwide.

Japan’s rise from 12th place in 2024 to ninth in 2025 highlights an improvement in traveler confidence. "The country is the exception to the rule that only sparsely populated countries are safe," the report noted, emphasizing Japan’s high population density paired with its low crime rates, including the world’s 12th-lowest homicide rate.

The report also highlighted Japan's growing accessibility for tourists, with more locals speaking English, making it easier for visitors to navigate the country. However, travelers are cautioned about Japan’s strict drug policies. "The Japanese government does not differentiate between medical and recreational marijuana, and possession can lead to a lengthy jail sentence and fines," the report warned.

Other countries featured in the global top 10 include Iceland, which claimed the top spot overall, followed by Australia, Canada, Ireland, Switzerland, New Zealand, Germany, Norway, and Denmark.
