United Airlines announced on September 1, 2026 that passengers rebooked to a later flight after a disruption can use its app to request standby on up to three earlier departures.
According to United's announcement, the airline monitors those flights and sends a text when a seat becomes available. Travelers then choose whether to switch, keeping their confirmed reservation until they decide.
What the feature changes
The tool lets eligible passengers pursue an earlier departure without repeatedly checking for open seats. Standby remains subject to seat availability; joining a list does not guarantee an earlier flight.
United said the rollout coincided with the September 3–8 Labor Day travel period, when it expected more than 3.4 million passengers. The feature expands existing recovery tools for rebooking, eligible meal and hotel vouchers, and checked-bag tracking.
