United Airlines has expanded fresh-food preordering to shorter economy-class flights, opening the service to 420 additional flights and 65,000 more passengers per day, according to carrier figures reported by Simple Flying on Oct. 19, 2026. The change is in effect now, bringing advance meal selection to several routes between United’s major hubs.

The airline lowered its flight-distance threshold from 1,190 miles to 900 miles, Simple Flying reported—a reduction of nearly 25%. For passengers on newly eligible flights, the change provides an opportunity to choose fresh food before boarding rather than make that decision during cabin service. But the ordering deadline matters: Preorders close 24 hours before departure.

Which United flights now qualify for food preorders?

The expansion concerns fresh-food preorders in economy class. According to Simple Flying, the lower threshold extends availability across additional routes in North America and the Caribbean. Newly eligible examples include Denver to San Francisco, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Chicago O’Hare, and Houston to Washington Dulles.

Those examples put the change squarely on routes that connect major United hubs, rather than limiting advance selection to longer journeys. United’s new distance threshold is 900 miles; passengers can check the preorder choices for their eligible departure through the airline’s app or website.

The scale also needs to be read correctly. United’s figure of 65,000 additional passengers per day describes the reach of the expanded service, not the number of people who have ordered meals. Likewise, the 420 daily flights are additions to preorder availability, not newly launched flights, according to Simple Flying’s account of the carrier’s announcement.

How to preorder, and when the window closes

Passengers can place orders through either United’s app or its website, Simple Flying reported. The ordering window opens five days before departure and stays open until 24 hours before the flight. That gives travelers a defined period to make their selection before the travel day.

For anyone with an existing booking on a newly eligible route, the useful next step is to look at the preorder choices during that window. There is no need to wait until boarding to decide, but there is also no last-minute preorder option in the schedule described by Simple Flying. Once the flight is less than 24 hours away, the published advance-ordering window has closed.

A rotating menu, not a fixed meal list

United’s economy preorder menu changes monthly, according to Simple Flying. That matters for repeat passengers: A dish offered for one trip should not be treated as a permanent selection for the next. The expansion gives more travelers access to the ordering system, while the food choices themselves continue to rotate.

Current selections identified in the report include a pork mojo burrito, a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich, and a cinnamon apple waffle, alongside United’s signature snackboxes and snacks. The menu’s repertoire is also set to feature a Chicago patty melt by Jeff Mauro of Mauro Provisions.

Looking ahead, Simple Flying reported that United’s monthly rotations will feature fresh sandwiches, burgers, pasta and breakfast options. These are categories planned for the rotating offering, not a promise that every category or dish will appear on every eligible flight. The choices presented for a particular departure are more useful than treating the announcement’s food list as a standing menu.

A separate food update is scheduled for Nov. 1, when United plans to refresh its snackboxes with new selections, according to Simple Flying. That refresh is distinct from the lower distance threshold, which has already taken effect.

Advance selection still has limits

Preordering offers more control over a small but tangible part of the flight. Simple Flying noted that advance orders can help passengers secure their preferred food and be served first. The publication also reported United’s caution that certain products can occasionally be unavailable. Advance selection should therefore not be read as an unconditional guarantee that a specific item will be delivered.

The change sits within a broader set of onboard updates. According to Simple Flying, United is adding TBS to 200 aircraft to offer more live sports, continuing its Starlink Wi-Fi rollout and aiming to have personal seatback displays on 1,000 jets by the end of 2027. Those projects have their own scope; they do not establish which entertainment features will accompany a newly eligible meal-preorder flight.

For the food service itself, the decision is straightforward: Check the available selections between five days and 24 hours before departure. The lower mileage threshold makes that option available on more flights, but the deadline and rotating menu still determine what a traveler can actually order.
