Best Places to Visit in the US in December 2026: Snow, Sun & Lights

Want December to mean sunscreen, ski boots or a walk past a spectacular Christmas tree? Start there. Hawaii is the strongest choice for beach warmth, Colorado for a ski-focused vacation, and New York for classic holiday atmosphere. The best places to visit in the US in December aren’t interchangeable; your budget, dates and tolerance for cold do most of the sorting.

There’s also a difference between sunshine and swimming weather. San Diego can deliver a lovely coastal afternoon without making you want to jump into the Pacific. Palm Springs might call for sunglasses at lunch and a jacket at dinner. And a ski resort’s opening day? That’s the beginning of its season, not a promise that every trail is ready.

This December 2026 planning guide is dated November 4, 2026; it isn’t a live weather forecast or an availability report. It covers domestic trips within our wider guide to the best places to visit in North America. For beaches beyond the US, see our separate December 2026 Caribbean beach guide.

My practical starting point: choose the experience first, then compare an early-December stay with your holiday-week dates. That calendar decision can matter more than the hotel brand.

Quick Facts

  • Best Time to Visit: Early to mid-December for potential savings; later December for holiday atmosphere and potentially broader ski terrain.
  • Currency: US dollar; sales and lodging taxes often appear separately.
  • Language: English is widely spoken.
  • Getting There: Fly into the destination’s main airport; allow extra transfer time for islands, the Keys and mountain resorts.

December Destinations at a Glance; When to Book

The rounded daytime/nighttime temperatures below are approximate December climate averages in Fahrenheit, not December 2026 forecasts. Named towns represent their regions; mountaintops can be substantially colder. Cost comparisons are relative, not room quotes.

  • Florida Keys, represented by Key West: Waterfront relaxation; about 77/67°F; high cost; holiday premiums and windy boat days.
  • San Diego: City and coast; about 66/49°F; moderate to high; chilly ocean water.
  • Palm Springs: Architecture and pools; about 69/45°F; moderate to high; confirm pool heating.
  • Hawaii, represented by Honolulu: Beach-focused trips; about 81/68°F; high; rain, winter surf and holiday demand.
  • Arizona, represented by Phoenix: Desert sightseeing; about 66/45°F; moderate to high; cold evenings.
  • Lake Tahoe, represented by South Lake Tahoe: Skiing and lake scenery; roughly 42/19°F; moderate to high; storms and variable coverage.
  • Colorado, represented by Frisco: Ski-focused stays; roughly 31/7°F; moderate to very high; altitude and mountain transfers.
  • Vermont, represented by Stowe village: Ski towns; roughly 32/15°F; moderate to high; freeze-thaw conditions.
  • New York, represented by Central Park: Holiday landmarks; about 44/33°F; high; packed weekends.
  • Chicago: Markets and museums; about 37/24°F; moderate; wind and freezing weather.
  • New Orleans: Food and festivities; about 64/47°F; moderate; rain and event-driven rates.

Early December can bring lighter leisure demand, but holiday-city weekends remain busy. Ski coverage is usually less developed early in the season; an open resort doesn’t mean all lifts operate. Snow-covered town streets are never guaranteed.

Book in this order: holiday-week flights and lodging, popular timed-entry lights, ski lessons and rentals, then restaurants and other activities.

Warm Coastal Escapes: The Florida Keys and San Diego

Florida Keys

The Keys offer mild days and generally drier weather, with demand climbing toward Christmas. Think waterfront lunches rather than guaranteed hot beach days. Snorkeling depends on wind, visibility and sea conditions.

Key West’s Schooner Wharf Bar Lighted Boat Parade is scheduled for December 12, 2026, at 8 p.m. Public waterfront viewing is free; the Historic Seaport around 202 William Street is a focal point. Arrive early, then make dinner part of the evening around the seaport’s seafood restaurants.

Key West’s historic core suits walking. Marathon works better as a driving base, with candidates including Fairfield Inn & Suites Marathon Florida Keys and Courtyard by Marriott Faro Blanco Resort. Both list daily parking charges; complimentary breakfast at Fairfield can help offset costs. For a Key Largo resort stay, consider Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection.

Flying into Key West avoids the long Overseas Highway drive. Miami or Fort Lauderdale may offer better flight choices, but reaching Key West becomes a substantial travel-day commitment. Check your actual route and traffic rather than building a tight dinner reservation around an optimistic map estimate.

San Diego

San Diego belongs among the warm places to visit in December in the US for sightseeing, not dependable swimming. Expect cool mornings, mild afternoons and occasional rain; holiday weekends draw extra visitors.

Pair Balboa Park’s museums with La Jolla coastal walks and Coronado’s seasonal atmosphere. Check official 2026 calendars before booking around Balboa Park December Nights or holiday activities at Hotel del Coronado.

Downtown provides useful trolley access; Little Italy makes an easy dinner stop, while Barrio Logan offers Mexican food and neighborhood art. A rental car helps with dispersed coastal destinations, but adds parking costs. San Diego International Airport is close to downtown; Coronado and La Jolla require onward transfers.

Desert Sunshine: Palm Springs and Arizona

Palm Springs

Palm Springs is about sunny sightseeing, midcentury architecture and spa time; December nights are genuinely chilly. A heated pool matters, and even that doesn’t guarantee comfortable lounging in windy weather.

Downtown lodging such as Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel puts restaurants within easier reach. Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and La Quinta are separate communities across the valley, not interchangeable downtown locations. La Quinta Resort & Club suits a resort-centered stay rather than nightly Palm Springs dining.

Fly into Palm Springs International and rent a car for Joshua Tree or valley exploring. The aerial tramway reaches a much colder mountain environment; check conditions and bring layers. Plan hikes around short daylight hours, not summer assumptions.

Arizona

Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tucson are the low-desert choices. Sedona sits higher and can have snow or ice; don’t pack for it as though it were Scottsdale.

Scottsdale offers a resort-oriented experience, with Hotel Valley Ho a lodging candidate. Tucson may offer better value on your dates; compare Arizona Inn with other local options rather than assuming a citywide bargain.

Build days around desert walks and Sonoran food, including Tucson’s South 12th Avenue corridor. Botanical-garden light events can shape an evening; check the Desert Botanical Garden and Tucson Botanical Gardens for 2026 calendars and ticket requirements.

Phoenix Sky Harbor and Tucson International are the principal airports. A car is useful beyond compact dining districts. Carry hiking water despite the cool air, check park conditions, and confirm hotel operation, heated-pool availability and the final stay total before paying.

Hawaii: The Strongest Pick for a Beach-Focused Week

For seven days, choose one island. Interisland flights consume more than the flight time itself, and nobody needs to spend a beach vacation repeatedly returning a rental car.

December brings warm temperatures, wetter-season weather and substantial holiday demand. Leeward bases can improve your odds of sunshine, not eliminate rain. Oʻahu offers the easiest mix of beaches, dining and visitor infrastructure; Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach is one candidate in walkable Waikīkī.

Alternatives include Sheraton Kauai Resort on Kauaʻi’s south shore and Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Hawaiʻi Island’s South Kohala area.

Waikīkī works with walking and transit; other island stays often benefit from a car. Plate lunches, farmers markets and neighborhood restaurants offer alternatives to resort dining.

Winter surf deserves respect. Watching Oʻahu’s North Shore waves is not permission to swim there. Follow beach warnings and lifeguard guidance. Compare mandatory charges, parking and holiday minimum stays before choosing a hotel.

Western Ski Trips: Lake Tahoe and Colorado

Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly suit travelers who want lodging, restaurants and après-ski close together. Margaritaville Resort Lake Tahoe is a candidate near the Heavenly Village area. Kirkwood offers a more mountain-focused setting with higher base elevation, but that doesn’t guarantee extensive early-December terrain.

Check each resort’s operating report, not just its advertised opening date. Sierra-at-Tahoe is another option when conditions support your preferred terrain. Beginners should look specifically for open learning areas and available lessons; experts should examine which advanced lifts actually run.

Reno–Tahoe International is the main gateway. Winter transfers can lengthen sharply during storms, and chain controls may apply. Check rental-car restrictions and current road requirements before driving.

Choose lodging near the mountain you expect to ski most. Crossing the basin repeatedly can turn an appealing multi-resort plan into a windshield tour. Town groceries and casual dinners help balance expensive mountain lunches.

Colorado

Copper Mountain is a practical starting point for a ski-focused vacation. Frisco offers restaurants and shops, while The Village at Copper Mountain lodging reduces the daily distance between breakfast and the lifts.

Check current Summit Stage routes and schedules before relying on transit from Frisco, and book the Denver airport transfer separately. Mountain traffic, weather and altitude all argue against skiing immediately after landing.

Aspen/Snowmass generally means a premium trip. Ski Cooper near Leadville and Sunlight near Glenwood Springs are worth comparing for smaller-area value, but price equivalent dates and ticket conditions. Hotel Colorado is a town base for a Glenwood stay, not slopeside accommodation.

Buy lift access only after checking the full family total, then reserve rentals and lessons. Allow an adjustment day, moderate that first celebratory drink, and leave a weather buffer before your flight home. Saving on a room won’t help much if your lift tickets swallow the difference.

Vermont: Ski Towns and New England Holiday Atmosphere

Stowe combines village browsing with mountain skiing; Okemo and nearby Ludlow are another family-friendly pairing. Expect cold weather, short days and freeze-thaw swings. Snowmaking helps, but neither snowy village streets nor a fully open mountain is guaranteed.

Compare slopeside The Lodge at Spruce Peak with village lodging that puts dinner and shops closer. At Okemo, Jackson Gore Inn is a mountain-base candidate.

Check Stowe’s official calendar for December village festivities before choosing dates. A brewery visit, local shops or a scenic town afternoon provides a useful non-ski backup. Reserve holiday dinners; keep another evening simple with pizza or pub food.

Burlington is the usual airport for Stowe. For Ludlow, compare Albany and Hartford’s Bradley airport, including winter drive time and airfare. Confirm transportation schedules before attempting a car-free stay, and inspect actual open terrain before buying tickets.

Holiday Cities: New York, Chicago and New Orleans

New York

New York is my pick when the holiday atmosphere matters more than warm weather or room size. December brings chilly days, rain and possible snow, with heavy crowds around major sights and shopping weekends.

Rockefeller Center anchors the trip, but seeing the illuminated tree after the lighting ceremony is generally simpler than attending the ceremony itself. Check official access and security arrangements. Add neighborhood decorations and a museum afternoon; a festive trip doesn’t require spending every hour outdoors.

New York Hilton Midtown is a convenient lodging candidate. Subway-connected alternatives in Long Island City or elsewhere in Manhattan can work well, provided the actual route suits your plans.

Eat beyond attraction-adjacent restaurants; Hell’s Kitchen offers options near Midtown, while downtown neighborhoods deserve their own evening. Compare JFK, LaGuardia and Newark using the complete ground-transfer cost. Once in town, the subway usually beats moving between holiday crowds in a taxi.

Chicago

Chicago makes a compelling lights-and-museums trip if you’re comfortable dressing for freezing weather. Snow is possible, not assured; wind can make a short walk feel considerably longer.

Check the official 2026 Christkindlmarket calendar for downtown holiday-market plans, then pair outdoor browsing with the Art Institute or another indoor stop. Chicago Botanic Garden’s Lightscape is a separate excursion in Glencoe, outside central Chicago; check admission, parking and return transportation before booking.

A Loop base such as Staypineapple, An Iconic Hotel, The Loop Chicago keeps downtown attractions manageable. Head toward the West Loop for a restaurant evening rather than treating every meal as a museum-café necessity.

O’Hare connects downtown by the Blue Line and Midway by the Orange Line. Check service notices, and balance hotel savings against location; a cheaper room far from your plans loses appeal during a freezing wait outside.

New Orleans

New Orleans offers a gentler winter than the northern cities, although rain and sharp cold fronts happen. Early December can be attractive for value; holiday dates and special events still lift demand.

Réveillon menus turn dinner into a seasonal occasion. Check participating restaurants, menus and reservation terms, then balance a special meal with po’boys or a neighborhood lunch. City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks is another anchor; consult its 2026 calendar and ticket options before planning the evening.

Hotel Monteleone puts you in the French Quarter. The Garden District offers a different atmosphere and access to Magazine Street browsing.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International requires a ground transfer into town; walking and streetcars handle many visitor outings. Check NOLA ChristmasFest’s dates rather than assuming an early-December visit overlaps. Christmas Eve levee bonfires are a regional excursion with separate transport needs, not a downtown walk.

Where to Go for Seven Days in December

Winter Sun: Six Nights on Oʻahu

Use day one for arrival and settling into Waikīkī. Spend days two and three on beach time, Honolulu neighborhoods and an optional reserved attraction. Use days four and five for one or two island excursions, swapping plans if rain or surf intervenes. Keep day six flexible; depart on day seven. This suits travelers seeking warmth without constant hotel changes. Airfare and holiday lodging are the main cost pressures.

Snow: Six Nights in Frisco or Copper Mountain

Arrive and adjust to altitude on day one. Ski days two and three, take day four for rest or town time, then ski days five and six if conditions and energy cooperate. Transfer and fly home on day seven with a generous buffer. An early departure may justify moving the final night nearer Denver. Lift access, lessons and rentals drive the budget.

Holiday City: Six Nights in New York

Keep arrival day light. Group Midtown decorations on day two, downtown neighborhoods on day three and museums on day four. Use day five for a borough outing and day six for missed favorites; depart on day seven. Reserve timed-entry attractions, not every hour. Hotels and paid attractions are the biggest pressures.

For a potentially cheaper sunshine week, compare early-December Tucson. These are alternative trips; combining Hawaii, skiing and an East Coast city in seven days mostly produces airport time.

Where Is Cheapest; How Do You Choose?

Start a budget search with Tucson, selected Phoenix neighborhoods and early-December New Orleans. Chicago may offer lodging value if cold weather doesn’t bother you. None is automatically the cheapest US destination; your departure airport can change the answer.

Compare identical early-December and holiday-week dates for two adults, using comparable refundable rooms and all mandatory charges. Then add flights, airport transfers, parking and activities. A low hotel rate doesn’t establish a low trip cost.

The Keys, Hawaii, premium ski towns and peak-period New York are generally weaker starting points for strict budgets, though individual deals exist. Compare weekday stays, use one base, and calculate whether a kitchen actually offsets its room premium. Free decorations can be just as enjoyable as another paid light display. For skiing, price lift access before falling for the hotel photographs.

Before You Pay

  • Read cancellation deadlines, deposits and holiday minimum-stay rules.
  • Reserve important holiday meals and check December 25 operating hours.
  • Confirm pool heating, resort or destination fees, and parking charges.
  • Check winter road requirements and transportation schedules.
  • Leave weather buffers around flights and mountain transfers.
  • Check official event calendars and current ski operations close to departure.

Which place is best for a trip in December? Hawaii for beach warmth, Colorado for skiing, New York for holiday atmosphere.

Where should you go for seven days in December? Choose one island on Oʻahu, one Colorado mountain base or six nights in New York; give arrival and departure their proper space.

Where is it cheapest to travel in December? Compare Tucson, Phoenix and New Orleans before the holiday peak, plus Chicago if you welcome winter. The best bargain is the trip you’ll enjoy without paying to escape its weather.
