South Lake Tahoe, California, has taken the top spot on Expedia’s list of rising destinations for 2027, with flight and accommodation searches increasing 195%, according to Time Out. The lakeside destination leads the company’s Unpack ’27 ranking, bringing fresh attention to a place whose appeal stretches from winter skiing to summer days on the water.
Expedia Group released the report Oct. 14, 2026, according to its announcement distributed by PR Newswire. For families and luxury travelers considering next year’s plans, the news provides a useful starting point, particularly alongside reported hotel developments. But the distinction is specific: South Lake Tahoe leads this list for growth in search interest, not for visitor numbers or the quality of a particular stay.
What Expedia’s 195% Search Increase Measures
The ranking compares flight and accommodation searches on Expedia from Sept. 1, 2025, through July 27, 2026, with searches from Sept. 1, 2024, through July 27, 2025, according to the company’s PR Newswire announcement. These are searches conducted during those periods; the methodology does not describe them as reservations for travel in 2027.
That distinction matters when interpreting a forward-looking travel report. Search activity records interest in a destination, rather than completed trips. A 195% increase should not be read as an equivalent rise in bookings, hotel occupancy or arrivals.
South Lake Tahoe’s growth places it ahead of second-ranked Hyogo, Japan, where searches increased 95%, according to Time Out. The publication also notes that Big Sky, Montana, led the previous year’s list with a 92% increase. Those figures provide context for Tahoe’s position without establishing which destination attracts the most travelers overall.
The broader Unpack ’27 report combines first-party data, social listening and a survey of 26,000 travelers, Expedia Group reported. The destination ranking itself, however, is based on search data, not a survey asking respondents to choose their favorite vacation spot.
South Lake Tahoe’s Appeal Changes With the Season
Time Out describes South Lake Tahoe as sitting on North America’s largest alpine lake, with skiing in winter and kayaking or paddleboarding in summer. Expedia Group characterizes it as a year-round mountain escape, highlighting alpine adventure and clear water.
For a family choosing between a summer vacation and a winter break, that seasonal distinction is more useful than the ranking alone. In my view, the activities should lead the decision: a lake-centered trip and a ski-centered trip are different holidays, even when they share the same destination.
There are also ways to explore beyond those headline pursuits. In an account of an early-October visit, Travel + Leisure highlighted coffee roasteries, hiking trails, small businesses and galleries. Its itinerary included breakfast at Ernie’s Coffee Shop on Emerald Bay Road and shopping and gallery visits in Valley Center.
The publication also described lakeside walking trails beginning at Regan Beach. For travelers interested in a longer outing, it cited the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority’s recommendations of the about 10-mile hike to the top of Mount Tallac and the nearly 2-mile round-trip, dog-friendly Eagle Falls Trail.
Those examples offer a useful range of itinerary ideas, rather than a single prescription for experiencing Tahoe. For a multigenerational group, I would treat the lakeside walks, shopping and galleries as distinct options alongside the longer hikes, not assume that every traveler needs to pursue the same outdoor objective.
Hotel Developments Add Another Reason to Look
South Lake Tahoe’s accommodation story is evolving alongside its outdoor appeal. Travel + Leisure reported the renovation of Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe, which hosts outdoor concerts in summer. The publication also reported that Montauk-based hospitality group Gurney’s plans to open an outpost in South Lake Tahoe in 2027, with lakeside rooms and suites.
For travelers who make the hotel a central part of the vacation, those are relevant developments. They are not, however, established explanations for the search increase: the supplied reporting does not connect either project to Expedia’s results.
The Gurney’s project also remains a planned opening, rather than an operating option described in the report. Travel + Leisure gives 2027 as the intended opening year but no specific opening date. I would therefore treat it as a property to watch, rather than the foundation of a date-sensitive family reservation.
A Trending Destination Is Not a Tourism Health Endorsement
There is another distinction worth preserving. Six of the destinations on Expedia’s list earned its Smart Travel Health Check, but South Lake Tahoe is not marked as a recipient, according to Time Out and Expedia Group’s published list.
Expedia Group says the framework was introduced with Unpack ’26 and was inspired by World Travel & Tourism Council principles for sustainable tourism management. It recognizes destinations for managing tourism responsibly while offering rich experiences. The company’s PR Newswire announcement also describes an emphasis on avoiding overcrowding.
Tahoe’s leading search-growth position should not be confused with that separate designation. Equally, its absence from the marked destinations does not establish why it was not recognized.
For travelers, the strongest reason to consider South Lake Tahoe remains the fit between the destination and the trip: winter sports, summer lake activities, walking trails, local galleries or a stay shaped around the waterfront. Expedia’s ranking puts it in the spotlight. The seasonal experiences and accommodation choices deserve to determine whether it belongs on your calendar.
