United Kingdom ETA checks require British-Canadian entry proof

Since Feb. 25, 2026, British-Canadian dual citizens flying to the UK need a valid British passport or a right-of-abode certificate in their Canadian passport.

British citizens living in Canada who also hold Canadian citizenship cannot rely on their Canadian passport alone to board a flight to the United Kingdom. Since full Electronic Travel Authorization enforcement began Feb. 25, 2026, they need proof of their right to enter Britain, normally a valid British passport, according to eTurboNews.

The problem is straightforward: British citizens cannot obtain an ETA. If their British passport has expired, applying for travel authorization against their Canadian passport is not a workaround. A certificate of entitlement to the right of abode is an alternative, but eTurboNews reports that it costs more than a standard passport renewal.

This is an enforcement change already in effect, not an approaching deadline. For affected travelers with UK flights booked, the task is to secure an accepted document before departure. Renewing from Canada involves an overseas application and shipping time, not a visit to a local British passport counter.

Why the UK ETA rule catches dual citizens

Canadian visitors have needed an ETA for UK travel since Jan. 8, 2025, according to eTurboNews. Full enforcement followed on Feb. 25, 2026, with carriers refusing boarding to passengers who hold neither an ETA nor proof of a right to enter the UK.

British and Irish citizens are not eligible for ETAs, the publication reports. For British-Canadian dual nationals, that creates an important distinction between citizenship and usable travel documentation. An expired British passport still demonstrates citizenship, but eTurboNews says it is not a valid travel document that airline staff can accept for the journey.

According to the report, dual nationals can use a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement placed inside their Canadian passport. The certificate expires with the Canadian passport containing it. Its higher cost and linked expiry make it a different proposition from simply renewing the British passport, rather than an equivalent low-cost substitute for an ETA.

Renewing a British passport from Canada

Adults can submit eligible renewal applications online through GOV.UK and send their old passport to HM Passport Office in Britain, eTurboNews reports. There is no British passport counter in Canada, and the British High Commission in Ottawa does not print passports.

An expired passport can still qualify for renewal. The key detail is its issue date, not simply how long it has been expired. According to eTurboNews, passports issued from 1994 onward follow the standard renewal route.

Passports issued before Jan. 1, 1994, require a first adult passport application instead, the publication reports. That route requires supporting documentation, such as a birth certificate, and a countersignatory who has known the applicant for at least two years. Finding an eligible countersignatory in Canada can add time to the process.

That distinction is worth checking before arranging travel. Someone retrieving a long-unused British passport may face more than a routine renewal, even though the document still establishes their citizenship.

Passport photos and validity have their own rules

A Canadian passport photo is not interchangeable with a British one. According to eTurboNews, Canadian passport photos measure 50 x 70 mm, while the UK standard is 35 x 45 mm. The online British application requires a digital image of at least 600 x 750 pixels.

Applicants should therefore request a photo for the British application, rather than assume a Canadian passport photo will work. eTurboNews specifically cautions that a pharmacy photo taken to Canadian specifications will not meet the British requirements without a new shot.

The publication also reports that HM Passport Office has not carried unused months from an old passport onto a replacement since 2018. A new adult passport is valid for 10 years from its issue date.

Allow for processing and shipping, not just the application

HM Passport Office advises overseas applicants to allow at least three weeks after it receives the old passport, according to eTurboNews. International courier time in both directions comes on top of that, and requests for additional information can extend the wait.

The starting point matters. Submitting the online form does not start a guaranteed three-week countdown to delivery. The reported processing allowance begins when the old passport reaches HM Passport Office.

eTurboNews describes a month or more from application to delivery as a planning estimate and recommends allowing at least six weeks for an overseas renewal. Those are planning assessments, not promised turnaround times.

The official expedited routes are not overseas services. According to eTurboNews, both the one-week Fast Track service and the same-day Online Premium service require an appointment at a passport office in Britain.

The report also identifies ASAP Passports, an independent UK company, as offering an express renewal service from Canada, with DHL Express collecting the old passport. That is a private intermediary, not HM Passport Office. It charges an additional fee, HM Passport Office still issues the document, and the company cannot change an official decision. The report provides no guaranteed turnaround for that service.

Emergency documents are a fallback, not a replacement

For urgent travel, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office can issue emergency travel documents to British nationals abroad who cannot obtain a passport in time, according to eTurboNews. Applicants must show booked travel, and consular staff assess each case individually. Approval is not guaranteed.

The document covers only the journey and countries listed on it. eTurboNews reports that it can enable a single trip to the UK, but it does not replace a full passport. Renewal still needs to be completed afterward.

For routine travel, check both passports before buying the ticket. According to eTurboNews, Canada requires its citizens to fly home on a valid Canadian passport, while the British document normally supplies the proof needed for the UK-bound flight.

The two documents serve different purposes. Keeping the Canadian passport current does not solve an expired British passport, and renewing the British one does not remove the Canadian requirement for the return flight. For travelers already holding reservations, checking the British passport’s issue date and starting the appropriate application is the practical first step. The emergency route should remain the fallback.
