In a major move to strengthen its global presence in the lifestyle lodging segment, Marriott International announced on April 28, 2025, that it will acquire boutique hotel chain citizenM in a $355 million transaction. The acquisition will eventually integrate citizenM properties into the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, though specific timelines and benefits for elite members have yet to be detailed.

“We are thrilled to add citizenM as a unique, differentiated offering to our select-service brand portfolio as we continue to strengthen Marriott’s foothold in this valuable market segment around the world,” said Anthony Capuano, Marriott’s president and CEO.

Founded in 2008 with its first location at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, citizenM has expanded to over 30 hotels in more than 20 cities worldwide. The brand is known for its affordable luxury accommodations in central locations such as New York’s Times Square, Washington, D.C.’s NoMa, and Paris’ Champs-Élysées. Its business model emphasizes high-end amenities, technology-first experiences, and vibrant common spaces designed for both work and leisure.

Marriott highlighted that the acquisition aligns with its strategy to broaden its select-service and lifestyle hotel offerings globally. With citizenM’s strong brand identity focused on art, design, and seamless technology, the addition is expected to enhance Marriott’s appeal to modern travelers seeking more flexible and stylish accommodations.

The deal comes as citizenM continues to grow, with three new hotels comprising over 600 rooms slated to open by mid-2026. Meanwhile, citizenM’s existing membership program, myCitizenM+, offers members benefits such as discounted room rates, access to coworking spaces, and food and beverage savings. Marriott’s announcement did not specify whether this program would continue or be integrated into Marriott Bonvoy.

As Marriott prepares to onboard citizenM’s properties, travelers and loyalty members alike await further updates on what this acquisition will mean for future stays and membership perks.
