A major air traffic control announcement is coming; a finished upgrade isn’t here yet. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says President Donald Trump will unveil details about new air traffic control software in the coming weeks, according to NewsNation.

The anticipated announcement follows Labor Day travel and concerns a broader effort to rebuild the technology behind the nation’s air traffic control system. A U.S. Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed to NewsNation that an announcement about modernizing airspace management would come soon.

What’s coming for air traffic control

According to NewsNation, the Federal Aviation Administration is working on a multibillion-dollar overhaul under the FAA Modernization Plan. The effort aims to reduce delays and replace outdated equipment that officials say has contributed to flight disruptions.

Communications systems and software are part of that work. But the report doesn’t identify the software Duffy previewed, a contractor, a specific price or a rollout schedule. There’s no firm date for Trump’s announcement beyond the coming weeks.

An announcement, not an immediate fix for delays

For travelers, the important distinction is between hearing the details and seeing the upgrades completed. NewsNation reports that officials don’t expect the broader modernization project to be completed until 2028; it does not establish a separate completion date for the software Duffy discussed.

Funding is also part of the unfinished business. According to NewsNation, Trump suggested Wednesday that additional money would be needed for portions of the modernization effort.

Reducing delays is the stated goal, not a result travelers can count on from this announcement alone. The next useful details will be what’s being installed and when it will actually enter service.
