Hawaii Declares Emergency Amid Wildfires, Advises Against Nonessential Travel to Maui

Hawaii is grappling with severe wildfires, particularly affecting west Maui and the Big Island's Kohala Coast. As a result, state officials are urging travelers to reconsider nonessential trips to Maui. While other Hawaiian islands remain unaffected, the situation in Maui has led to thousands of evacuations, road closures, power disruptions, and significant damage.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority released a statement asking visitors on nonessential trips to depart from Maui and strongly discouraging upcoming nonessential travel to the region. Those with imminent travel plans to west Maui are encouraged to postpone their trips.

Several hotels, including the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, have temporarily halted operations due to the fires and related challenges. Power outages have been widespread, with west Maui still experiencing a blackout and over 11,000 individuals without electricity.

The wildfires, which started on Tuesday, were exacerbated by winds from Hurricane Dora, which passed south of Hawaii. While the hurricane wasn't the direct cause of the fires, it contributed to their spread. Many residents from areas like Lahaina, Kula, North Kihei, and Kaanapali on Maui, as well as Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii, were evacuated. Some even sought refuge in the ocean to escape the flames.

Communication has been a significant challenge, with 911 services, cell service, and phone service down in many areas. Satellite phones became the primary means of communication in certain parts of Maui.

Air travel has also been affected. While Kahului Airport (OGG) and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) remain operational, airlines like Hawaiian Airlines have advised passengers to monitor their flights for updates. American Airlines canceled all incoming flights to OGG on Wednesday, and several other flights have been disrupted.

In light of the situation, Southwest Airlines is offering discounted flights for those wishing to leave Maui for other Hawaiian islands. The airline has also reduced the in-cabin pet fee for these flights.

Mandatory evacuations have been enforced in several areas, with the National Guard assisting in the efforts. The road to west Maui, leading to Lahaina, has been closed to all but emergency personnel.

The wildfires and their aftermath underscore the importance of travelers staying informed and prioritizing safety during such events.
