Even under the best conditions, managing Iceland's Blue Lagoon, a top tourist destination, is challenging. The threat of volcanic eruptions has added complexity, leading to several evacuations since late 2022. Despite this, the Blue Lagoon is advancing ambitious plans to enhance its geothermal spa and expand its hospitality footprint.

One significant update is the construction of a protective wall against lava flows, complemented by a new "welcome house" integrated into the wall. This facility will house check-in and retail areas, situated about 328 yards from the main Blue Lagoon facilities and connected via a pathway. Additionally, a new main access road is being constructed to replace the previous route damaged by lava flows.

Enhancements to the spa include refreshed changing rooms, new showers, tech-enabled lockers, and added outdoor features like a sauna, steam cave, cold plunge, and massage waterfalls, all expected to be completed by the end of the year. The Silica Hotel, part of the Blue Lagoon, will also undergo renovations this fall.

The Blue Lagoon's expansion strategy includes new projects across Iceland. One such project is Highland Base, an adventure-focused hospitality concept in Kerlingarfjoll, offering diverse accommodations and geothermal baths. Another is the Mountain Retreat in Thjorsardalur Valley, featuring a 41-room luxury hotel, campsite, and hut-style accommodations, set to open by 2027. A fourth project, the Glacier Retreat near the Vatnajokull glacier, is expected to open within the decade, offering luxury hotel rooms and a geothermal bath attraction.

Sigurdur Thorsteinsson, Blue Lagoon's head of business development, emphasized the brand's adaptability, stating, "We've turned challenges into opportunities. The experience will be much nicer." The expansion aims to provide varied experiences, from extreme winter activities at Highland Base to luxurious retreats, ensuring accessibility for all visitors.
